Anger Management in New Jersey: PTI, Probation and Your Class
Will a New Jersey court take an online class?
We found no state or Judiciary list for anger management in New Jersey. Our class is court-accepted in most jurisdictions, your officer decides, and you get a full refund if your certificate isn't accepted.
In New Jersey, probation and Pretrial Intervention (PTI) are supervised by the Probation Division of the Superior Court, county by county. The courts are grouped into vicinages. Your probation officer is usually the person who says yes or no to a class. Here is what to ask them first.

How New Jersey courts put anger management on your list
New Jersey law lets a judge attach "reasonable conditions" to probation. The list includes treatment, a course of study, and any other condition tied to rehabilitation. "Anger management" is not named in the law. Judges and probation officers add it case by case. You'll see it in:
- Probation after a conviction, from Superior Court or a municipal court, often after a simple assault or harassment charge.
- Pretrial Intervention (PTI). You apply through the county prosecutor. Charges are put on hold for six months to three years while you are supervised. You must do the counseling your probation officer decides you need. Finish PTI and the charges are dismissed.
- Conditional dismissal in municipal court, for some first-time disorderly persons offenses: about a year of supervision, then dismissal.
- Family court. In custody and parenting time cases (FM divorce or FD non-dissolution dockets), a judge may order an anger management class or evaluation before changing parenting time.
- Work and school. Employers and schools sometimes ask for a class. They make their own call.
Your court order, PTI agreement or judgment is the paper that counts.
Is there a New Jersey list of anger management providers?
We found no statewide list of anger management providers in New Jersey. The Judiciary does not publish one, and no state agency sets standards for anger management classes.
What you will run into is local practice:
- Probation officers in each vicinage refer people to providers they know. We found no published referral list.
- Local counseling centers run court-referred weekly groups.
- A judge can name a provider in the order. Then the order controls.
If your officer gives you a list, ask whether an outside online class can count instead. Good Standing Courses is not on any state, county, vicinage or court list.
Not for domestic violence orders
Domestic violence cases: FRO counseling is different
Under New Jersey's Prevention of Domestic Violence Act, a Final Restraining Order (FRO) can order professional domestic violence counseling, from a private provider or one the court appoints, with proof of attendance. It can also order a psychiatric evaluation. An FRO can't be dissolved until required counseling is finished.
The state's Division on Women also funds 21 Abuse Intervention Programs (formerly Batterer Intervention Programs) covering every county.
If your paperwork calls for domestic violence counseling, an abuse intervention program or an evaluation, an online anger class does not satisfy it. Good Standing Courses is not a Batterer Intervention Program or an Abuse Intervention Program.
A domestic violence charge committed while a restraining order was in place also carries a presumption against PTI. Ask your lawyer.
How long New Jersey anger classes usually are
New Jersey has no standard length for anger management, and orders often say only "complete anger management." Local programs often run weekly groups, for example 12 sessions.
Lengths people are commonly asked for:
- 8 hours for shorter orders and employers.
- 12 hours for many probation and PTI conditions.
- 16 hours when the officer wants more.
If your paperwork says "anger management" with no hours or weeks, ask your probation officer before you buy.

Ask before you buy
What to ask your probation or PTI officer before you enroll
- "Can I use an online, self-paced anger management class, or do you need a provider from your referral list?"
- "How many hours or weeks, and what is my deadline?"
- "Does my order or FRO call for domestic violence counseling or an evaluation instead?"
- "Do you need the certificate emailed, uploaded, or brought to my next report date?"
- If you're in PTI or conditional dismissal: "Will this class count toward my conditions so the charges can be dismissed?" (Ask your lawyer this one too.)
Your officer can read our page for probation officers and check your certificate at /verify.
If your court says no
If your court, judge or probation officer doesn't accept your certificate, we refund 100% of the course fee. Send the written rejection within 60 days of finishing; the class you bought must match the type and hours in your order. Read the refund terms.
We never ask for your case number, court or date of birth. If you need them on the certificate, you type them into your own copy of the PDF.
New Jersey: questions and answers
Is there a court approved anger management class list in New Jersey?
We found no state or Judiciary list for anger management in New Jersey. Probation officers refer people locally. Our class is court-accepted in most jurisdictions, your officer decides, and you get a full refund if your certificate isn't accepted.
What is PTI?
Pretrial Intervention, a diversion program for many first-time offenders. Probation supervises you. Finish the conditions and the charges are dismissed.
My FRO says "domestic violence counseling." Can I take your class?
No. FRO counseling is professional counseling, and the court may pick the provider. We are an educational course, not an abuse intervention program.
My judgment says "anger management" with no hours. Which class do I buy?
Ask your probation officer first. Many people buy the 12-hour anger management class, but only your officer can say what will count.
Can my officer see that I actually did the hours?
Yes. Our timer counts only active time and logs every session. Your officer enters the certificate ID and your last name at our verify page.
I live in New Jersey but my case is in New York or Pennsylvania. Does this page apply?
Follow the rules of the state and county where your case is. The court that gave the order decides what it accepts.
