Anger Management in Idaho: Boise and Nampa Courts, Probation and Your Class

Will an Idaho court take an online class?

There is no state list for anger management in Idaho. Our class is court-accepted in most jurisdictions, your magistrate or officer decides, and you get a full refund if they turn down the certificate.

In Idaho, an anger class usually comes from a magistrate judge who withholds judgment or suspends jail time and then puts you on county misdemeanor probation. Felony cases go to the Idaho Department of Correction. The person watching your case has the final word on an online class, so this guide shows you who that is and what to ask them.

How an Idaho case turns into an anger class

Idaho has one statewide court system. There are no city courts. Every misdemeanor, from a bar fight in downtown Boise to a shoving match in a Nampa parking lot, is heard by a magistrate judge in the county courthouse. Felonies go to a district judge in the same building.

Most anger classes in Idaho come out of one of these paths:

  • Withheld judgment. This is the big one in Idaho. Under Idaho Code 19-2601, a judge can accept your guilty plea but hold off on entering a conviction. You get probation with a list of tasks. An anger class is often on that list. If you finish everything, Idaho Code 19-2604 lets you ask the court to set aside the plea and dismiss the case. Missing the class can cost you that chance.
  • Suspended sentence. The same law lets the judge give you jail time and then suspend most or all of it. You stay out as long as you meet the terms, and a class is a common term.
  • County misdemeanor probation. In Idaho, each county runs its own misdemeanor probation office. Ada County and Canyon County both have one. Your probation officer there tracks your classes, fees and check-ins. Some people get "unsupervised" probation instead, where you just bring proof to the court by a deadline.
  • Felony probation. If a district judge puts you on felony probation, you are supervised by Probation and Parole at the Idaho Department of Correction. The state is split into seven districts, and your officer sets how you show proof of any program.
  • Civil protection orders and family cases. A judge hearing a protection order or a custody dispute can also ask for a class. That judge decides what counts.

The words on your paperwork matter. Some Idaho orders say "anger management." Others say "counseling" or "complete any treatment recommended by the evaluation." Those are not the same thing, so look at the exact wording before you pick anything.

Boise, Nampa and the rest of the Treasure Valley

Most of Idaho's anger management orders start in the Treasure Valley, so here is how the two biggest counties work.

Ada County (Boise, Meridian, Eagle, Kuna, Star, Garden City). Cases are heard at the Ada County Courthouse in Boise, which is part of Idaho's Fourth Judicial District. People placed on supervised probation by a magistrate report to Ada County Misdemeanor Probation, which the Ada County Sheriff's Office runs. Its conditions can include treatment, classes, community service, fines and restitution. The county clerk also posts a treatment provider list for people with court orders. Its June 2024 version names local agencies in Boise that offer anger management, along with theft classes, parenting classes and substance use care. We could not confirm whether the county expects you to use a listed agency, so ask.

Ada County also has a Domestic Violence Court. In those cases the judge may order counseling, an evaluation, parenting classes, anger management or a domestic violence intervention program, and then hold review hearings to check on you.

Canyon County (Nampa, Caldwell, Middleton). Cases go to the Canyon County Courthouse in Caldwell, in the Third Judicial District. Canyon County runs its own misdemeanor probation office. We did not find a public statement from it on whether online anger classes count, so treat that as an open question for your officer.

Other Idaho cities. Idaho Falls cases are heard in Bonneville County, Pocatello cases in Bannock County, Twin Falls in Twin Falls County, and Coeur d'Alene in Kootenai County. Each county has its own misdemeanor probation setup and its own habits. A rule in Boise does not carry over to Coeur d'Alene.

Is there an Idaho list of anger management providers?

No. No Idaho agency approves or lists general anger management classes. The state keeps two lists, and neither one is about anger classes:

  • Domestic battery evaluators. Idaho Court Administrative Rule 75 sets up a board that reviews people who do the evaluation required in domestic battery cases. The Administrative Director of the Courts keeps a statewide list of these evaluators.
  • Domestic violence offender intervention programs. The Idaho Council on Domestic Violence and Victim Assistance reviews and lists these programs. They are long programs built for partner and family cases.

Below that, counties keep their own resource sheets. Ada County's treatment provider list is the clearest example. A sheet like that shows who is nearby. It does not always say that a class from someone else is off limits. That part is up to your officer or judge.

Good Standing Courses is not on any Idaho court, county, Department of Correction or Council list. We do not hold an Idaho license. So the safe move is to check with your officer or the court clerk first.

Not for domestic violence orders

Domestic battery cases in Idaho need a different program

Idaho treats violence against a household member as domestic battery under Idaho Code 18-918. If you plead guilty or are found guilty, the law says you must get an evaluation at your own expense from an evaluator the court has approved. The evaluation says whether you need counseling or treatment and what kind. If it does, that treatment must follow standards that the Idaho Council on Domestic Violence and Victim Assistance sets or signs off on.

The Council's programs are long. Its current minimum standards call for at least 52 group sessions of 90 minutes, usually once a week, unless the court order says otherwise. In-person groups are preferred. Video sessions are for extreme hardship only, need approval from the court, and must be run by a program the Council has cleared for video. The same standards say anger management is not a substitute for domestic violence intervention.

Good Standing Courses is not a Batterer Intervention Program, and it is not a domestic violence offender intervention program that the Idaho Council reviews. If your case involves a spouse, partner, family member or someone you live with, our class will not meet that order. Talk to your lawyer about the evaluation and the program it names.

Will an Idaho court accept an online anger management class?

We found no Idaho statute, court rule or statewide policy that bans online anger management classes. We also found none that allows them by name. The choice sits with the magistrate who signed the order, the county probation officer, or your Department of Correction officer.

Here is what points each way in real Idaho cases:

  • Against: Ada County hands out a list of local treatment providers, and some officers will steer you to it. Domestic battery cases follow the evaluation and the Council's program rules, which limit video sessions. Orders that say "counseling" may mean clinical counseling sessions, not an educational course.
  • For: Many Idaho orders simply say "complete anger management" with no provider named. People on unsupervised probation often just bring a certificate to the clerk by the deadline. Rural counties have few local groups, so officers in those areas are used to remote options.

Things that make an Idaho officer more comfortable:

  • A certificate that shows the hours, your start and finish dates and a final test score.
  • A way to check the certificate online instead of trusting a printout.
  • Hours that match the order exactly.
  • A quick email to your officer before you start, so the answer is in writing.

How long Idaho anger classes usually are

Idaho has no set length for anger management. The judge writes the hours, or leaves it to your officer.

  • 8 hours: a common pick for a first misdemeanor, like a fight or disturbing the peace. Medium-low confidence; it is based on what providers in the state offer, not a published rule.
  • 12 to 16 hours: seen in cases with a withheld judgment on a more serious charge or a second incident. Low confidence.
  • Longer weekly groups: some local agencies run anger groups over several weeks. If your order names one of those, take that one.

If your order lists no hours, ask your officer or the clerk before you start.

Choose your hours

Paperwork says "impulse control" or "decision making"? That's our Impulse Control & Decision Making class.

Enrollment is currently closed.

Court-accepted in most jurisdictions. Educational course, not therapy. Acceptance is decided by your court or officer. See a sample certificate

Ask your officer first

What to ask your Idaho probation officer or court clerk

  1. "My order says anger management. Can I take an online class, or do I have to use someone on the county's provider list?"
  2. "How many hours do I need, and by what date do I have to show proof?"
  3. "Is this an anger class, or treatment from my domestic battery evaluation under Idaho Code 18-918? If it is the second, which program do I use?"
  4. "Do I give the certificate to you, to the clerk at the courthouse, or upload it somewhere?"
  5. If you have a withheld judgment: "Once I finish this class and my other terms, can I ask to have the case dismissed under Idaho Code 19-2604?" (Ask your lawyer too.)

Your officer can read our page for probation officers and check your certificate at /verify.

Idaho: questions and answers

Is there a court approved anger management list in Idaho?

There is no state list for anger management in Idaho. The courts keep a list of domestic battery evaluators, and the Idaho Council on Domestic Violence and Victim Assistance reviews intervention programs for partner cases. Counties like Ada post local provider sheets. Our class is court-accepted in most jurisdictions, your magistrate or officer decides, and you get a full refund if they turn down the certificate.

Will an Idaho court accept an online anger management class?

Idaho has no rule either way. The magistrate, your county misdemeanor probation officer or your Department of Correction officer makes the call. Ask before you start, and keep the answer in writing.

I got a withheld judgment in Boise. Does the class really matter?

Yes. A withheld judgment depends on finishing every term of probation. If you skip the class or miss the deadline, the judge can enter the conviction. If you finish, you can ask the court to dismiss the case.

My case is in Nampa. Who checks my class?

Nampa cases are heard at the Canyon County Courthouse in Caldwell. If you are on supervised probation, your Canyon County misdemeanor probation officer checks it. If not, you usually file proof with the court clerk.

Can this class replace the program from my domestic battery evaluation?

No. Idaho Code 18-918 sends you to an evaluator on the court's list, and any treatment follows the Idaho Council's standards, which call for at least 52 sessions. We are not that kind of program.

My order says 8 hours of anger management. Which length should I take?

If an outside class is allowed, choose the 8-hour anger management class. The certificate lists 8 hours, your start and finish dates and your final score.

I'm on felony probation with the Idaho Department of Correction. Who decides?

Your Probation and Parole officer, within the terms the district judge set. Ask them before you start any class.
