Anger Management in Nevada: Las Vegas Courts, Impulse Control and Your Class
Will a Nevada court take an online class?
There is no state list for anger management in Nevada. Our class is court-accepted in most jurisdictions, your judge or officer decides, and you get a full refund if they don't accept the certificate.
In Las Vegas and across Nevada, most anger classes come from a misdemeanor court that suspends part of a sentence until you show proof. Felony and gross misdemeanor cases go to state Parole and Probation. Either way, one person decides whether an online class counts. Here is who that is and what to ask.

Nevada at a glance
- Provider list
- No state list or approval. Some courts and counties keep their own.
- Typical length
- 8 hours is the common Las Vegas impulse control condition.

How Nevada cases lead to an anger class
Nevada splits criminal cases between three kinds of courts, and the kind of court shapes who watches your class.
- Justice courts and municipal courts (misdemeanors). Las Vegas Justice Court, Henderson Justice Court, Reno Justice Court and the city municipal courts handle most simple battery, threats, fights and property damage. A judge there often suspends jail time on conditions. NRS 4.373 lets a justice of the peace order "professional counseling" at your own cost, plus any other conduct the judge thinks fits. A suspension usually runs up to two years. You then come back for a status check, and the clerk files your certificate.
- City and county alternative sentencing offices. Nevada lets cities and counties create a "department of alternative sentencing" (NRS chapter 211A) to supervise misdemeanor probation. Washoe County runs one for the Reno area. Henderson's version now sits inside the police department's Corrections Division. If one of these offices supervises you, your case officer there checks the class.
- District court (felonies and gross misdemeanors). In Clark County this is the Eighth Judicial District Court; in Washoe County, the Second. Under NRS 176A.400 the judge can add any reasonable condition, and for lower felonies can require you to finish a program or treatment. People placed on probation are supervised by the Nevada Division of Parole and Probation, part of the Department of Public Safety.
- Deferred judgment. Under NRS 176.211 a court can hold off on entering a conviction after a plea. Finish every term, which may include a class, and the case is dismissed and sealed. Las Vegas news reports have described deferrals with an eight-hour impulse control class as one of the conditions.
- Family court and work. A custody case in the Eighth District's Family Division, or a workplace incident, can also end with a request for a class. Those decide for themselves.
In Nevada paperwork you will often see the words "impulse control" or "counseling" instead of "anger management." Read your order closely. The exact words matter when you pick a class.
Las Vegas: Municipal Court, Justice Court and Henderson
Las Vegas is where most Nevada anger cases start, so it gets its own section.
Las Vegas Municipal Court handles misdemeanors inside city limits. Its Alternative Sentencing and Education team runs its own classes. The court's resources page describes Impulse Control as an educational program "designed for offenders who commit battery against non-family members." The standard program is four two-hour classes or one eight-hour accelerated class. An Extended Impulse Control program runs 13 classes of 1.5 hours. Both are offered in English and Spanish, in person or by live video. Many people sentenced in this court are simply signed up for the court's own class. If your paperwork says "Impulse Control" and names the court's program, an outside class may not count. Ask before you start anything else.
Las Vegas Justice Court covers misdemeanors in unincorporated Clark County and the Strip area. We did not find a public list of anger class providers there. Case records show the court tracks completion through status checks, with a counseling report or certificate filed in the case.
Henderson has its own municipal and justice courts. Henderson Municipal Court probationers report to the Special Programs and Services Section of the Henderson Police Department's Corrections Division, which the city created in 2017. It oversees classes and helps people meet the judge's orders.
North Las Vegas Municipal Court is described by local defense firms as ordering "Anger Management / Impulse Control" at Level 1 or Level 2. Check your sheet for the level.
Is there a Nevada list of anger management providers?
No. Nevada has no state agency that approves or lists anger management or impulse control classes. The state only certifies programs for people convicted of battery against a partner or family member, and that is a different thing.
What you will find is local practice:
- Court-run classes. Las Vegas Municipal Court runs its own Impulse Control program, as described above.
- County referral lists. Washoe County's Department of Alternative Sentencing posts a counseling provider list for the Reno and Sparks area. A few local agencies on it offer anger management next to substance abuse and mental health care. A list like this tells you who is nearby. It does not always say an outside online class is barred, so ask.
- Parole and Probation. A 2018 Division of Parole and Probation acknowledgment form says the Division accepts service providers that hold a Nevada license, does not endorse any one provider, and hands out regional lists only as general information. You must start services by a set date and bring proof of completion.
Good Standing Courses is not on any Nevada court, county, city or Parole and Probation list. We do not hold a Nevada license. That is why the first step is a short talk with your judge's clerk or your officer.
Not for domestic violence orders
Domestic violence cases need a certified treatment program
Nevada treats battery against a spouse, partner, family member or someone you live with as "battery constituting domestic violence" under NRS 200.485. For a first offense within seven years, the court must order counseling of at least 1.5 hours a week for 6 to 12 months, at your expense. A second offense means 12 months. The program has to be certified under NRS 439.258 by the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health.
Online is not an option for this order. Las Vegas Municipal Court's own page says the state does not accept online domestic violence classes and that all classes must be attended in person. The court runs its program at two levels: 26 classes or 52 classes.
Good Standing Courses is not a Batterer Intervention Program or a certified Nevada domestic violence treatment program. If your case involves a partner or family member, an anger class will not satisfy that order. Talk to your lawyer about the program the court named.
Will a Nevada court accept an online anger management class?
We found no Nevada statute, court rule or statewide policy that bans online anger management or impulse control classes. We also found no rule that allows them. It is left to the judge who wrote the order, the alternative sentencing officer, or your Parole and Probation officer.
Real Nevada practice points both ways:
- Against: Las Vegas Municipal Court runs its own Impulse Control program, so its judges may expect you in that class. Parole and Probation's form points people to providers with a Nevada license. Washoe County keeps a local counseling list.
- For: Las Vegas Municipal Court itself offers several of its classes online or by live video, including impaired driving awareness and substance abuse courses, which shows the court is not opposed to remote learning as a rule. Many Nevada providers sell live Zoom and self-paced classes to people with Las Vegas and Reno orders and tell them to check with the court first.
What tends to help an officer or clerk say yes:
- A certificate that lists the exact hours, the start and finish dates, and a final score.
- A certificate ID they can check online, not just a PDF you hand over.
- A class length that matches the order to the hour.
- Asking before you start, and getting the answer in an email or a note on your file.
If your order says "counseling" rather than "class," ask whether an educational course counts. Some Nevada judges mean sessions with a counselor.
How long Nevada anger classes usually are
The number you see most in Las Vegas is 8 hours. That is the length of the Municipal Court's standard Impulse Control program, either four two-hour classes or one Saturday class.
- 8 hours: the common Las Vegas impulse control condition for a first misdemeanor battery. High confidence for Municipal Court; medium for other courts.
- About 20 hours: the Municipal Court's Extended Impulse Control program, 13 sessions of 1.5 hours, for people who need more.
- 12 to 16 hours or more: shows up in some district court, family court and Reno orders. Lower confidence; it depends on the judge.
If your sheet says "impulse control" or "anger management" with no hours, call the clerk or your officer before you start.

Ask your officer first
What to ask your Nevada court clerk or officer before you start
- "My paperwork says impulse control (or anger management). Does it have to be the court's own program, or can I take an online class from an outside provider?"
- "How many hours do I need, and what date is my status check or deadline?"
- "Is this order for an anger class, or for domestic violence counseling under NRS 200.485? If it is the second, which certified program do I use?"
- "Should I file the certificate with the clerk, email it to my alternative sentencing or Parole and Probation officer, or bring it to court?"
- If your judgment was deferred: "Once I finish this class and the other terms, will the case be dismissed and sealed?" (Ask your lawyer this one too.)
Your officer can read our page for probation officers and check your certificate at /verify.
Nevada: questions and answers
Is there a court approved anger management list in Nevada?
There is no state list for anger management in Nevada. The state only certifies treatment programs for domestic violence cases, through the Division of Public and Behavioral Health. Some courts run their own classes, like Las Vegas Municipal Court's Impulse Control program, and Washoe County posts a local counseling list. Our class is court-accepted in most jurisdictions, your judge or officer decides, and you get a full refund if they don't accept the certificate.
Will a Nevada court accept an online anger management class?
Nevada has no rule either way, so it is up to the judge, the alternative sentencing office or your Parole and Probation officer. In Las Vegas Municipal Court, ask first whether you must use the court's own Impulse Control program.
My Las Vegas paperwork says "impulse control." Is that the same as anger management?
They cover a lot of the same skills, and many Nevada courts use the terms side by side. But if the order names the court's own program, take that program. If it just says "impulse control class," ask whether our Impulse Control & Decision Making class or an anger class fits.
Can I take this class instead of domestic violence counseling?
No. NRS 200.485 requires a program that the Division of Public and Behavioral Health has certified, for at least six months, and Las Vegas Municipal Court says online classes don't count for it. We are not that kind of program.
My order says 8 hours of impulse control. Which length do I choose?
If an outside class is allowed, choose the 8-hour anger management class. The certificate shows 8 hours, your start and finish dates and a final score.
I'm on felony probation in Clark County. Who decides?
Your officer at the Nevada Division of Parole and Probation, within the terms the district court set. The Division's form says it accepts providers holding a Nevada license, so ask your officer before you start.
I live in Reno. Does the same apply?
Mostly. Reno and Sparks misdemeanor cases are often watched by Washoe County's Department of Alternative Sentencing, which keeps its own counseling list. Ask your case officer there whether an online class can count.
